AUL Tabang Sa Tugang (TASATU) Initiatives in Tiwi
by Hazel M. Bermundo
Several activities had been conducted in close coordination with the Center for Community Involvement (CCI) of Aquinas University of Legazpi (AUL) this January 2017 in response to the pressing needs of the affected areas including one of AULís partner community, Misibis Tiwi, Albay, during the wrath of typhoon Nina in the Bicol Region on December 25, 2016.
The records of Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council-Tiwi (MDRRMC-Tiwi) declared Misibis as the area with the highest number of totally damage houses and also with highest number of injured individuals. Several abacas, coconut trees and source of living have been affected due to such disastrous event.
Different organizations showed their support through relief operations, donations of roofing materials, stress debriefing and other activities to at least relieve the affected individuals from the effects of the recent typhoon Nina.
Days after the typhoon Nina, December 31, 2016, six Anduyog volunteers and two CCI staff paved the way and walk the hill to the Agta Tabangnon at Sitio Antom, Misibis, Tiwi, Albay. An ocular visit and damage assessment were the main objectives of the group as they evaluate the situation of the community. They also facilitated a simple stress debriefing through an arts workshop for the kids. Some residents and volunteers assisted each other for the community cooking. The group also provided some blankets and t-shirts. Chieftain Erlinda Cerenio gave the group a list of affected families and the tentative list of the couples for the planned AUL Agta Mass Wedding this February.
Another activity organized and spearheaded by the AUL Tourism Society, the organization of Tourism Students in Aquinas University was held on January 14, 2017, Saturday at the chapel of Misibis, Tiwi, Albay. 80 residents composed of indigenous people (IP) members and non-IP members benefitted from the relief operation. The group facilitated games and simple snacks for all the participants.
A day after, January 15, 2017, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Legazpi, Legazpi-Dawani, Sorsogon and Manila chapters seek CCI and Anduyog Volunteersí assistance for their OPLAN Kaagaay/Damayan: Community Service and Outreach Activity. AUL identified Sitio Antom, Misibis, Tiwi, Albay as JCIís area of the relief operation, thereby, benefitting 200 families, 150 IP members and 50 non-IP families, for the activity. Relief goods like rice, canned goods, noodles, and flambeaus were provided.
Also, community cooking and facilitation of games were some of the activities conducted. The group also turned over roofing materials such as GI sheets, plywood and others to Tabgon Elementary School through Teacher Naome Lerin.
On January 28, 2017, the Parent-Instructors and Students Association (PISA) of High School Department plans to conduct a relief operation, this time at the Agta Community of Joroan, Tiwi, Albay. The PISA High School made their family day very simple to provide services to the affected families.
Some AUL Alumni volunteers also have the plan to reach the municipality of Tiwi, hopefully this February 4, 2017. The AUL community is also soliciting donations from the students and employees to benefit other barangays of Tiwi.
With these numerous involvements, the Aquinian way is truly being manifested to our brothers and sisters who are in the course of times like the recent devastation. May we always live in unity with Godís people. Thank you Aquinians!
