13TH BRAPS Convention

Aquinas University of Legazpi (AUL) Psychology Society spearheaded the Bicol Region Association of Psychology Students (BRAPS) Convention on Feb. 18, 2017. This year’s theme was ‘Blurred lines: Promoting Gender Equality by Integrating the Emphasis of Mental Health on Gender Sensitivity with Gender Equality.

Now on its 13th year, the convention served as the gathering of Psychology students from all over the Bicol Region. BRAPS is composed of Ateneo de Naga University, Aquinas University of Legazpi, Divine Word College of Legazpi, University of Nueva Caceres, University of Saint Anthony, Universidad de Santa Isabel, and Ago Medical and Educational Center. Over 280 students participated in the convention.

The morning session started with the random assignment of the participants to eight teams to develop the rapport of student from various schools. Silvino Balasta, program chair of the Social Sciences, welcomed the delegates in his opening remarks. Jerome Columna, president of BRAPS, introduced the main speaker for the plenary talk which is Dr. Salvacion Villafuerte, a registered psychologist, LGBT advocate on rights and well-being, and a professor of Bicol University. An open forum took place after the talk.

For the afternoon session, there were four workshops conducted simultaneously. Speakers of the workshops were: Maja Francisco on Feminism Psychology, Dr. Salvacion Villafuerte on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE), Nikki Estevez on Anti-discrimination, and Lea Sabilla on Positive Psychology. Delegates were then gathered after the workshop to proceed with games, quiz bee, and presentation of the new set of officers. With eight teams competing in games and quizzes, participants helped develop great camaraderie among their teammates.

Through the plenary talk and sessions, the students were able to further extend their knowledge in Psychology. Emphasizing the importance of mental health and promotion on gender equality, the convention aimed to amplify their learning as well as be an advocate of Mental Health and gender sensitivity with gender equality as Psychology majors in the Bicol Region.

University of Nueva Caceres will host the next BRAPS Convention next year.
