AUL strengthens Medtech, Pharmacy programs through topnotch professors

Aquinas University of Legazpi (AUL) envisions itself to be a leader in the Bicol Region when it comes to various fields of discipline such as Law, Teacher Education, Business Management, Accountancy, Engineering, Architecture, Communication Arts, and Health Sciences. In order to actualize this vision, the University has three pillars of support which are the pillars of academic excellence, moral formation, and emotional maturity.

Known for being a leader in Health Sciences and being true to one of the Universityís main thrusts which is academic excellence, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) continues to be a prime conduit of quality education by offering programs such as Medical Technology (Medtech) and Pharmacy (Pharma).

To continue the departmentís legacy in the field of Health Sciences and to assure that the students of Medtech and Pharma programs will have a quality education, CHS made sure that the professors handling the courses of the said programs are the cream of the crop. These four professors were topnotchers in their respective licensure examinations. They are also pursuing their graduate studies in their field of expertise.

Under the Medtech program, we have Professor Alvin Rey Flores. Prof. Flores is currently completing his Doctorate Degree in Public Health (Parasitology) in the University of the Philippines-Manila. Flores obtained his Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology degree in University of Santo Tomas (UST). He was a consistent Deanís Lister during his tenure as a student and he graduated from UST with a latin honor, Magna Cum Laude. Further, Flores topped the Sep 2009 Medical Technologist Licensure Exam. Now at AUL, he teaches Bacteriology and Parasitology to fourth-year Medtech students. Prof. Flores is also a member different local and international organizations related to his field such as: Philippine Association of Schools of Medtech and Public Health, Philippine Society of Parasitology, Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET), American Society for Clinical Pathology, and American Society for Microbiology.

Meanwhile, there are three licensure examination topnotchers who teach various courses in the Pharma program. Professor Henson Turalde, who is currently on a break from St. Lukeís College of Medicine, recently joined the roster of faculty members. Prof. Turalde earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of the Philippines-Manila. Also, Turalde topped the Jan 2013 Pharmacy Licensure Examination with a whopping-average of 91.62%. He teaches the lecture and laboratory component of the Pharmacology 2 and Therapeutics and Quality Control 2: Drug Testing and Assay With Instrumentation and two more courses. Professor Marvin Quizon, with a masterís degree in Pharmacy (Industrial Pharmacy), taught courses in the said program. Prof. Quizon placed fifth in the Pharmacist Licensure Exam. Quizonís researches, ďIn Vitro Equivalence Testing of Immediate-Release Tablets under BCS-Based Biowaiver ConditionsĒ and ďDetermination of Amlodipine in Tablets Using a Validated High Performance Liquid Chromatography Assay, were published in The UP Manila Journal. To complete the roster, we have Professor Joshua Arimado with a masterís degree in Pharmacy. Prof. Arimado placed seventh in the Pharmacist Licensure Exam. Further, he is affiliated with organizations such as Philippine Pharmaceutical Association and Junior Pharmaceutical Organization.

CHS Dean Vicente Peralta shared that he is grateful for the partnership established with UST. Without the linkage, students from other parts of the Bicol Region will have to travel to Manila to pursue those degrees. Students enrolled in the Medtech and Pharma programs of AUL came from all the provinces of Bicol. Dean Peralta added that he sees the dedication and hardwork of the Medtech and Pharma students; this is the effect when you have passionate teachers as well, students follow the lead.

CHS will continue its ripple in the community, as the department develops students into Health Sciences professionals who are of caliber to benefit the country in the future.
