Notes: The College Of Nursing Alumni Homecoming 2012

The College of Nursing alumni homecoming was on Feb 12-15, 2012. The theme of the activity was “The Aquinian Nurse… A Global Professional”. The activity was sponsored by Batch 1972 and the College of Nursing Alumni International. It was attended by 216 alumni, students and guests. Thirteen alumni-nurses based abroad came home to attend the homecoming.

The first day (Feb 12, 2011) was started with a Holy Mass, celebrated by the Fr. Rector and President, Rev. Fr. Ernesto M. Arceo, OP, and the Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs, Rev. Fr. Roberto G. Reyes. It was followed by a simple program, lunch and chika-chika (conversation and exchange of ideas).

For the second day a panel discussion for the 4th year nursing students about “The Past, Present and Future of Nursing” was conducted in the morning. The speaker was Ms. Carmen Calisin, the President of Batch 1972 and former Dean of the College of Nursing. In the afternoon there was a symposium with alumni titled “Rekindling the Fire of Nursing Commitment with the Pioneers”. The speakers were Dr. Benjie Villaraza for the topic Emergency Care Management in Arizona and Owen Escalada, the president of the Nursing Alumni International, for the topic Preoperative Nursing Pathway.

The third day was spent at Fidel Surtida, Sto. Domingo, Albay, the adopted community of the College of Nursing, for the medical and dental mission. The theme of the activity was “Sharing is Caring”. This was participated in by invited doctors, the alumni, the Saludamay volunteers of BSN 4 and the faculty of the College of Nursing.

The group enjoyed a night’s soiree at the St Ellis hotel as a culminating activity during the fourth day (Feb 15, 2012). They were joined by Fr. Arceo and Fr. Reyes.

The College of Nursing took advantage of the expertise of the alumni who came home from abroad. Special sessions were conducted, to wit: Seminar on Career Path in Nursing attended by the 3rd year nursing students with Jeany de Villa Murphy as the speaker on Feb 15, 2012, and Seminar on Critical Care nursing on Feb 16, 2012, attended by the 4th year nursing students with Dr. Benjie Villaraza and wife Ma. Teresa Villaraza as the speakers.

The Graduate School also benefited from the presence of our nurse- alumni experts. A research forum was conducted on Feb. 18, 2012 at the Professional Schools with Jeany de Villa Murphy as the speaker. This was attended by the doctorate students, and those enrolled in thesis and dissertation
