University to host regional disaster risk reduction summit
Congressmen from the Bicol region, LGU officials, and other stakeholders are expected to meet in the first Bicol Summit on Disaster Risk Reduction and Multi-Hazard Awareness, which will be held in the University May 3, at the Daragang Magayon Hall.
The summit is organized by the office of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III. It aims to bring together all the stakeholders in keeping people safe, including the private sector, the academe, civil society groups and the local communities, from the risks posed by disasters.
“Our government has the responsibility to protect the people, particularly the marginalized members of society, from the ever worsening impact of natural and man-made disasters and of climate change. One effective way by which the government can protect our people against the risks brought about by disasters is to prepare them to react properly against the occurrence of such disasters. It is undeniable that disasters will indeed occur, it was never a question of if, but it has always been a question of when. However, a well prepared citizenry can truly contribute to disaster risk reduction,” wrote Atty. Ericson H. Balmez, the summit’s conference director.
Among the summit topics are Disaster Risk Reduction / Climate Change Innovation in Albay Province (presented by Hon. Joey Sarte Salceda, Governor of Albay); Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis, Impact and Challenges on DRR Initiatives in Bicol Province (presented by Renato Solidum, Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology); Impact of Improper Mining Activities: Disaster Implications on an Island Ecosystem (presented by Dr. Emelina G. Regis of Ateneo de Naga University Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research); and Institutionalizing DRRM Office or Early Warning System, Communication Protocol and Evacuation Procedures, “The Zero Casualty Strategy” (presented by Dr. Cedric Daep, Chief of Albay Public Safety Management Office).
The event is being facilitated by the Legal Resource Center of the College of Law and the Aquinas University of Legazpi Emergency Response Team (ALERT).
