AUL sponsors four-day Chemistry with Charisma

The University is sponsoring a Short Course on Effective Teaching and Learning of Chemistry, dubbed Chemistry with Charisma, from May 8 to 11, 2012 at the St. Martin de Porres (formerly St. Albert the Great) Building.

The course is conducted by Professors Arlyne Mickey Sarquis and Dr. Lynn Hogue of Miami University- Middletown, USA. They are the prime movers of Terrific Science, an internationally recognized provider of professional development courses and developer of chemistry education resources for teachers and students.

The seminar workshop aims to contribute to the improvement of the teaching and learning of chemistry in schools. Particularly, it aims to provide teachers pedagogically rich lessons on how to engage students’ interest in learning chemistry; broaden the participant teachers’ repository of teaching techniques that will facilitate the students’ understanding of abstract concepts and phenomena in chemistry; and to familiarize participants with strategies on how to convey to the students the methodology of scientific investigation and develop in them the skills fundamental to scientific inquiry, among others.

The event is part of Chemistry Across Borders: International Programs to Let Students Shine, a project of Dr. Sarquis. It is conducted in cooperation with the University of Santo Tomas, through Professor Fortunato Sevilla III. The workshop is attended by chemistry teachers and students from the Bicol Region.
